Do My Best

It’s like this…

To be forced to surrender is one thing,

But to accept it as the most viable option is another

I can’t explain why I’ll do my best to always be there for you,

It’s not to show my aunt and uncle how to “properly play the role”.

Your birth has agitated a long line of resentments—desires to change what cannot be undone

We try to re-mold our image in front of eyes that haven’t seen our past—as an offering to those that we need to forgive us.

I’d like you to know I left my baggage at the hospital shortly before you were born.

I can’t explain why I’ll do my best to always be there for you,

It’s not to protect you,

I know you see your angels.

Your great grandmama’s prayers will cloak you as they’ve me, your mother and your uncles.

I can’t explain why I’ll do my best to always be there for you,

It’s not to be the favorite… I think,

The love I have to share with you is no different than the love I will share with my wife,

Or that I share with your mother,

Or your uncles,

Or your grandparents,

Or God.

Please remember, there are no favorites on God’s land.

I can’t explain why I’ll do my best to always be there for you,

But if I fall short,

And your hands can’t reach me,

And your ego seems to have led you astray

Whisper to God and watch the truth unravel,

You are the miracle.

How blessed we are to seek and experience enlightenment

With a chance to dissolve and become the most solid reflection of God’s love

When you know this you’ll know,

I’ll always be there for you.
